Yes All GamersSo I guess my last journal kinda annoyed a few people who were upset at being generally labeled “gamers” when talking about the extremists who are using the term for their own causes: ie: #GamerGate. I’m not going to apologize for writing the journal that way, though. If you don’t want to be associated with those bigots and your first reaction is to personally vindicate yourself from the herd instead of, you know, fighting the main source of the problem... them I’m sorry but that negative version of “gamer” that you’re trying so hard to avoid being associated with IS how you are being perceived by the greater non-gamer entrenched world.
THEY don’t care that you “only want to play games that are fun,” because what they’re SEEING (and reporting on) is a hoard mentality of angry people rallying against women in gaming and harassing them to unreal levels. No matter how much you try to distance yourse
10 Years of ControversyOver the past couple days I’ve had a number of people write me comments basically saying “You’re becoming too preachy, you’ve lost a fan.” And outside the silliness of publicly mic-dropping like that, it got me wondering... what?
Ya see, It’s always surprises me when someone says that I’m becoming too preachy, when in fact I’ve been preachy from the beginning. Don’t believe me? Take a look below!
This is not a complete list by any stretch of the imagination, but these are essentially THE MOST controversial comics and illustrations I’ve ever done in the past 10 years.
2004 - Made a picture about how no one really cares about Global Warming http://andysartworks.com/global-warming
2005 - Took the side of Jark in the Deviant Art hostile overthrow controversy. http://andysartworks.com/i-support-jark
2007 and Onward - Made a series of “Danny and Spot” comics dedicated towards defending the Wii from the hatr
Marvel SpeculationI haven’t seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet (so please no spoilers if you comment), but that’s not gonna stop me from talking about how well the film is doing and what it might mean in the future.
Box Office Smash
Analysts originally projected that GOTG was gonna make around $36 million at the box office this weekend. But with ticket sales flying like crazy, analysts are now projecting around $96 million just for the opening weekend alone. WOW. I guess congratulations are in order for Marvel/Disney for making such a good movie. However, with the sales just increasing every single time a new Marvel movie comes out, I have to wonder and play “devil’s advocate” here for a minute...
Is Marvel’s reputation deserved?
Ok, hear me out. This isn’t me getting on the hate bandwagon or anything, i’m just curious. Coming from an objective standpoint are Marvel movies actually better than, say, DC
Sims 4 Won't Have Toddlers, and Pacific Rim 2Sims 4 won’t Have Toddlers and Pools
The industry is at it again. Remember how Ubisoft said “women are too hard to animate” when pressed about why there were no female characters available for Assassins Creed 4’s multiplayer mode? Well let’s add babies and inanimate objects to that list of “too hard to animate” things in video games!
In a recent blog post on the Sim’s official website, it was revealed that toddlers and pools are being excluded from the Sims 4 because, in the words of the developers:
It's not possible for us to include every single feature and piece of content we added to The Sims 3 over the last five years
Ok, I get that. Just because it’s a new game doesn’t mean it has to be a retread of the previous games. Totally understandable. But you know what’s not understandable? Why toddlers and pools? Why wouldn’t those be included? Last time I checked, those were kin
Twitter Plug, Korra, NSYAC and Pirate UpdatesSDCC is finally here and as a result there’s probably gonna be a lot of amazing news dropped over this weekend. As such I just wanted to get some preliminary things out of the way before the bombs drop and obscure everything else.
I have a twitter. I’ve actually managed to keep up with it at a fairly reasonable pace, I think. Primarily I’m using it now to comment on things that are too small to make it into my main journals, but too important to pass up. Most of the times it’s just me musing about stuff. You can see the twitter feed above my journal on my DA frontpage (I always list the last 5 posts there), or you can follow me here: https://twitter.com/ADobsonComics
Korra is all digital now
I don’t know why Nickelodeon decided to do this, but they’ve yanked Legend of Korra off the air and are going to be broadcasting the remaining episodes of Season 3 and all of Season 4 on their online streaming service
Nerds, Apollo, 2D Animation, Pixar CartellYour Princess Is In Another Castle
I know this is a little late, but it’s still an excellent read. This article that came out after the sorority murders in California a few months back details pretty succinctly the problem I and others have with how Nerd Culture treats women.
The article touches upon the narrative that a lot of nerds internalize, the idea that women are prizes to be “won” after a series of persistent attempts. The idea that jocks are dumb and nerds are smart, which is a concept even I bought into until fairly recently.
In fact, if I may, I would like to apologize for this strip from 2011: http://syacartoonist.com/things-i-will-never-understand and any others that I’ve done over the years that depict “jocks” as dumb brainless animals. It’s a narrative belief that I bought into and now understand isn’t as true anymore today as it was when I was in high school some 15 years ago.
But anyway, the article its
Did some light anatomy and coloring practice. In December, I’ll be going to Comiket, and I need to prepare a doujin. I don’t want to use any of my established characters, so I’m cleaning up an old concept with a pair of spies, agents “Monochome” and “Prismatic.” It’s a Cold War sort of thing with enough plot and geopolitical worldbuilding for a full comic.
Eh, I can gut it and make a fair yaoi from the remains.
